Kemp Muhl

juni 12, 2016 | Maybelline

Model-turned-musician, Kemp Muhl, loves fashion and beauty. But it doesn’t define her. In fact, Muhl’s true passions are helping animals and playing music.

Despite being the youngest woman in history to appear on the cover of Britain’s Harpers & Queen Magazine, and working with some of the world’s most influential Photographers, Muhl prefers to spend her time volunteering for the ASPCA and playing in her band, “Ghost of the Saber Tooth Tiger.”

THE BEAUTIFUL BOHEMIAN

She is an entirely self-taught musician, playing the bass, the accordion, the guitar, the piano and composing the riffs alongside band partner, Sean Lennon. It’s that bohemian vibe coupled with her rocker looks that makes Muhl one of the most desirable models in the world.

You kind of have to be sensitive to be in rock and roll.

When Muhl isn’t composing music or teaching herself the guitar bass, piano and drums she often finds herself getting ready for a gig or modeling shoot inside her vast and enviable dream closet.

Maybelline went to her West Village townhouse to see just what was inside. Muhl answers the door in a long drapey velvet kimono, the bell sleeves pushed above her elbows. She ushers us inside her home so we can see just what goes into her beauty routine.

Upstairs, inside a closet the size of someone else’s living room, is a collection of antique and vintage clothing that would rival that of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A black leather motorcycle jacket hangs over a red chaise lounge. Faux furs, silk dresses, large floppy hats, cowboy boots and a giant plaster bunny head grace her shelves, lending to the feeling that this closet is the tunnel to Wonderland. And Muhl, of course, is a brunette Alice.

Muhl sits down at her glass vanity and explains her style.

“If Maybelline NY is Manhattan, and all the girls represent different neighborhoods, I definitely would be the West Village circa 1970,” Kemp says. “That’s when Bob Dylan was playing on Bleecker Street and record shops were everywhere.”

She gestures to a rack of silk tea dresses.

“I guess you could say my look is bohemian rocker minus the nag champa.”

When we ask about her favorite beauty buys, Muhl opens a drawer to reveal her makeup collection. Front and center is Colossal Spider Effect Mascara. She turns the yellow tube in her hands.

“When I want lashes like Joan Jett, this is my go-to,” she says, twisting the mascara open and adding a swipe to her lashes to demonstrate. “They make my eyes pop so I look stellar on stage.”

She digs out a thick makeup pencil in a shimmery lilac. It’s the ColorTattoo Concentrated Crayon. She glides it along the crease of her eyelid, and then pulls out a jar of glitter and lightly dusts it atop the eyeshadow.

“Glitter is cool because it’s like glam rock. But the rhinestone trend needs to die,” she laughs, motioning to a giveaway pile of bedazzled jean jackets.

Such is the life for supermodel Kemp Muhl — where beauty, bohemian life and a sense of humor give her that inner IT we know and love.
